What is it?
Boxelder bugs are native insects that feed on Manitoba maples (aka boxelders) and can also be found on ash or other maple species. They are harmless to trees and humans, but their massive numbers can be a nuisance.
Symptoms
- Adult boxelder bugs are about 1/2 inch long, black body with red “X” mark.
- Large numbers of boxelder bugs congregate on exterior walls and fences.
- An unpleasant odor is released when the bugs are crushed.
Damages
- They do not cause damage to tree, human and property.
- They will sneak into indoor to find warmer place for winter.
- They are nuisance because of the look and numbers.
What to do?
- Seal every holes and cracks into your house.
- Spray soapy water to fences and exterior walls.
- Vacuum them with shop vacuum (fill some water in the bin).
- Chemical control is not recommended because they might be harmful to other beneficial insects.
